According to a new study, the natural tendency of the human brain to reduce life's uncertainties saps everyday experience of its poignancy. In the experiment, study participants watched an abridged version of Rudy , an uplifting film about a determined football player. The subjects then read two stories about what happened to Rudy later in life; half were told which story was true, while the other half were left in the dark. Even though both stories had happy endings, the group that found out the truth felt less cheerful than the group left wondering. In other words, (1) _________________________________. Researchers chalk up their results to what they call the "pleasure paradox." The urge to understand events may reduce the joy we take in them. "A wonderful thing about the human mind is its ability to make sense of a complex world," says Timothy D. Wilson, a psychologist at the University of Virginia and lead author of the study. When we confront negative experiences, our knack for finding meaning helps us cope. But on the flip side, Wilson says, we rationalize positive experiences; as they come to seem more (2) ___________, they lose their (3) ___________ intensity. Yet small surprises may safely and simply boost your happiness, according to Wilson. Even though it sounds counterintuitive, you may feel merrier if you don't know exactly how a movie ends.

[14-16] Read the following passage and answer the questions.

Parents would certainly deny it , but researchers have made a startling assertion: parents take better care of pretty children than they do ugly ones. Researchers in Canada carefully observed how parents treated their children during trips to the supermarket. They found that physical attractiveness made a big difference. The researchers noted if the parents (a) belted their youngsters into the grocery cart seat, how often the parents' attention lapsed and the number of times the children were allowed to engage in potentially dangerous activities like standing up in the shopping cart. They also rated each child's physical attractiveness on a 10-point scale. When it came to (b) buckling up , pretty and ugly children were treated in starkly different ways, with seat belt use ______________. When a woman was in charge, 4 percent of the homeliest children were (c) strapped in compared with 13.3 percent of the most attractive children. The difference was even more acute when fathers led the shopping expedition. In those cases, none of the least attractive children were secured with seat belts, while 12.5 percent of the prettiest children were. Homely children were also more often out of sight of their parents, and they were more often allowed to (d) wander more than 10 feet away.

[14] What does the underlined word " it " in the first line refer to?

[17-19] Read the following passage and answer the questions.

Researchers say malnutrition in the first few years of life leads to antisocial and aggressive behavior throughout childhood and late adolescence. For 14 years, researchers followed the nutritional, behavioral, and cognitive development of children who lived on Mauritius. The children's intelligence level and cognitive ability were also tested, and social workers visited their homes to come up with a so-called adversity score that summarized factors such as the income, occupation, health, age, and education levels of their parents and their overall living conditions. At ages 8, 11, and 17 years, the researchers looked at how the children were behaving in school and at home. Over time, a link became evident between malnourishment and antisocial or aggressive behavior, said Dr. Raine. (1) _______________ those in the control group--the group that did not suffer from nutritional deficiencies--malnourished children showed a 41 percent increase in aggression at age 8 and a 51 percent increase in violent and antisocial behavior at age 17. While social class did not play a significant factor in behavior, intelligence level did, Raine said. "Poor nutrition, characterized by zinc, iron, vitamin B, and protein deficiencies, leads to low IQ, which leads to later antisocial behavior," he said. "These are all nutrients linked to brain development." Researchers also found that the more indicators of malnutrition there were, the greater the antisocial behavior. "(2)__________ is not destiny," Raine said.

[20-22] Read the following passage and answer the questions.

Marriage in the Middle Ages was almost exclusively a social, family concern--as it has been forever, of course, in Asia, and is to this day for many in the West. One was married according to family arrangements. (   1   ) Particularly in aristocratic circles, young women hardly out of girlhood were married off as political pawns. And the Church, meanwhile, was sacramentalizing such unions with its inappropriately mystical language about the two that were now to be of one flesh, united through love and by God. (   2   ) For not only could one be burned at the stake in punishment for adultery, but, according to current belief, one would also burn forever in Hell. And yet love came, even so, to such noble hearts as were celebrated by Gottfried; not only came, but was invited in.      (   3   ) And it was the work of the troubadours to celebrate this passion, which in their view was of a divine grace altogether highly in dignity than the sacraments of the Church, higher than the sacrament of marriage, and, if excluded from Heaven, then sanctified in Hell. (   4   ) And that the word AMOR (love) was the reverse in spelling of ROMA seemed marvelously to epitomize the sense of the ________________; the Roman empire once ruthlessly persecuted the Church.

[20] Choose the most appropriate place for the following sentence.

Any actual experience of love could enter into such a system only as a harbinger of disaster.

① ( 1 )         ② ( 2 )         ③ ( 3 )         ④ ( 4 )

[21] According to the passage, which of the following statements is CORRECT?

① Aristocratic women in the Middle Ages married whomever they wanted to.

② Adultery in the Middle Ages was not a serious crime.

③ The troubadours opposed the Church's concept of love.

④ The Church thought that true love was possible only in Hell.

[23-25] Read the following passage and answer the questions.

It is necessary to bear in mind that the judicial records in the seventeenth century reveal two essential facts about accused witches: they were poor, and they were usually women. Learned authorities never had any doubt that the weaker sex was more vulnerable to the temptations of Satan. James I estimated the ratio of female witches to male at twenty to one. Alexander Roberts put it as high as a hundred to one. In fact, of the one hundred and nine persons whom Mr. Ewen showed to have been executed on the Home Circuit only seven were men. Contemporary writers also agreed that witches came from the lowest ranks of society. They were usually beggars, thought Scot; "very miserable poor, the basest sort of people," said Richard Bernard. "Witches for the most part live in extreme beggary," agreed John Donne. Of nearly six hundred persons accused on the Home Circuit, Ewen calculated that all but four were tradesmen, husbandmen, and laborers, or their womenfolk. Elsewhere the general pattern appears to be the same. Laborers and their wives or widows always predominate. This was not because witch-beliefs did not circulate in the higher reaches of society.  ____________, they were familiar at every social level.  But in the witch trials the accused were overwhelmingly drawn from the bottom of the social hierarchy.

[23] Which of the following would be the most appropriate title for this passage?

① What Did Witches Do?

② Why Were Witches Persecuted?

③ Who Were the Witches?

④ How Were Witches Executed?

[24] According to the passage, which of the following statements is INCORRECT?

① Most 17th century witches were recruited from the economic elite.

② Most of the executed witches were female rather than male.

③ Widowers had less chance of becoming witches than widows.
